Arncliffe, Littondale
Autumn view of Arncliffe, Littondale

Littondale takes its name from one of the settlements in the dale rather than the river that flows through it. Arncliffe (which means "Eagles' Cliff") is the largest of the four settlements in the dale. The river is the Skirfare but for most of its length it flows underground, owing to the porosity of its limestone bed.
